David Montgomery  <- Campus Minister, Murray State U.

David is co-pastor, along with his wife Ann Marie Montgomery, of First Presbyterian Church in Murray, KY.   In addition to serving the church as co-pastor, David is also the Presbyterian Campus Minister at Murray State University.

A product of campus ministry, David met Ann Marie at the campus ministry house at Western Carolina University.  He still remains in touch with his campus minister, the Rev. Stanley Bennett.

David has deep roots in the Presbyterian Church.  He grew up in Richmond in the “Presbyterian ghetto” where his mother worked at the Presbyterian School of Christian Education and his father worked for the Presbyterian Board of Christian Education.  He admired Glenn Bannerman, studies recreational leadership in college and went on to lead recreation at a therapeutic camp in North Carolina and serve as the youth director at First Presbyterian Church, Fort Worth, TX.

A graduate of Louisville Seminary, David has been an Associate Pastor, a solo Pastor and now both co-pastor and campus minister. The campus ministry at Murray State has a close relationship with First Presbyterian.  The church was founded in 1931 for the purpose of campus ministry and has been such a presence ever since.  On the corner of the Murray State campus, the church has a campus ministry house on its grounds.  This house is the sight of Wednesday night fellowship when the students may gather to hear a community leader speak or they may go bowling.  Thursdays is a luncheon and book study at the house.

An annual spring break mission trip is also part of the program.  For the past two years a group traveled to New Orleans and worked with Samaritan’s Purse.  In 2009 they plan to do a Habitat for Humanity build on John’s Island, South Carolina.  The students also participate in service to the local community, raking leaves or collecting Christmas gifts for needy children through “Operation Christmas Child.”

In addition to working with the students, the campus ministry at Murray State also reaches out to the faculty and staff.  Retired history professor and campus ministry board chair Dr. Ken Wolf leads a book discussion for faculty and staff.  The group is currently studying Marcus Borg’s The Heart of Christianity.

David finds the most satisfying part of his ministry with college students is participating in their faith formation.  Students are away from their parents, making decisions on their own and beginning to see God through their own eyes, beginning to understand what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ.
