Grace Presbyterian Breaks Ground
for New Church
A vision of a new church from the merging of three
smaller churches in the eastern area of Birmingham became more of a reality
on February 16th when Grace Presbyterian Church held a groundbreaking
ceremony on their new property located on Deerfoot Parkway in Trussville.
Grace, a redevelopment project of the Presbytery
of Sheppards and Lapsley is the result of a vision grounded in the hearts
of three different churches. On Pentecost Sunday, almost three years ago,
East Lake, Pinson and Huffman Presbyterian Churches united to become Grace
Presbyterian Church.
Since the founding of Grace Presbyterian, the congregation
has been meeting at the old Huffman location. Final services were held
in that building on February 16th with a groundbreaking service at the
new location, taking place later that afternoon.
Although the new facility will be located in Trussville,
Grace is dedicated to continue their mission emphasis in the Birmingham
area, which has been the root for all three of the former congregations.
Grace also looks forward to the possibilities of ministries that exist
in the rapidly growing Trussville/ Chalkville area.
Construction of the new church facility is scheduled
to begin in April and is expected to be completed in nine to twelve months.
Until the completion of their new facility, the congregation is presently
holding worship services at Hewitt Trussville High School. The staff offices
are located at 6020 Deerfoot Parkway close to where the church is being
constructed.
“According to the grace of God given to
me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else
is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on
it. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been
laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ.”
Representing Grace Presbyterian Church at
the groundbreaking held on February 16th are: Kenneth Laney, Chair Presbyterian
Men; Robbie Benton, Clerk of Session; Floyd Curtis, Building Committee
Chair; Cynthia Sartin, Presbyterian Women Moderator; Chris Jones, Pastor;
Judy Lee, Board of Deacons Chair; Maggie Reddick, Youth; Shirley Dunn,
