COLLEGE AND SEMINARY NEWSKing College announces that stewardship seminars (annual, capital and planned giving) will be held regionally. “With the expertise on our staff, this is an opportunity to ‘give back’ to our congregations,” said James M. Wood, MA, CPA and Vice President for Institutional Advancement. King College plans to hold seminars throughout the Synod of Living Waters each year so pastors and lay leadership can receive (free) updates on giving trends and strategies as well as tax law changes that encourage philanthropy. Wood is frequently invited and accepts opportunities to preach and/or teach. He may be reached at 1350 King College Rd., Bristol, TN 37620, 423-652-4710. * * * Nearly 900 Tusculum College students, faculty, and staff provided more than 4,250 cumulative hours in service in September to the community during the annual, campus-wide “Nettie Fowler McCormick Service Day,” a day committed to service projects in Northeast Tennessee. Coordinated by Tusculum’s Service- Learning Center, projects were completed at 29 sites in Greene County, seven in Johnson City, and two in Kingsport as well as on campus. The types of service varied from helping serve a meal at a Christian mission for the homeless to painting at local museums to debating medical professional issues with a high school health sciences class. * * * Brent White, Matton Professor of Psychology at Centre College, has received the 2003 Kentucky Academy of Science Outstanding College/ University Science Teacher Award. Leaders are Tom Long, John Westerhoff, Barbara Brown Taylor, Anna Carter Florence and Dent Davis. * * * The work of the Louisville Institute continues with a grant renewal. Lilly Endowment Inc. has awarded a grant to Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary of $10,564,149 to support the work of The Louisville Institute through 2006. Louisville Seminary will confer degrees upon eleven potential graduates who plan to complete their degree requirements in December. With a mid-year graduation date, established in 2000, these students will not have to wait until the May 23 Commencement exercises to receive their degrees. * * * A $1 million grant for the Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine to expand its medical research capabilities has been approved by the Appalachian Regional Commission. The funding will help the college construct an 8,046-square-foot expansion of the Armington Science Building to house the new Appalachian Medical Research Institute. The Institute will investigate some of Eastern Kentucky and Central Appalachia’s most pressing health problems. * * * Maryville College Assistant Professor of Health, Physical Education and Outdoor Recreation Dr. Danny Pierce was named “Physical Education Teacher of the Year” for college and universities in Tennessee. |
