The Wings of Flight

I’ve seen the fleece-lined clouds above,
     And flown beyond the blue;
I’ve soared beneath those towering cliffs
     Where eagles never flew.

I’ve topped the towering spires on high
     And skimmed the billowy floor,
And sped through misty canyons which
     I’ve never seen before.

I’ve circled those great thunderheads
     Ethereal and wide,
And felt the glorious power of flight
That fills the heart with pride.

And as I watched that shimmering scene
So far from earth’s firm sod,
I looked with eager, longing eyes
To catch a glimpse of God.

I saw no pearly gates up there,
Or walls, as we are told,
No towers, thrones, or diadems,
     Or even streets of gold.

No disembodied spirits there,
     No angels in that place,
No saints or prophets did I see
     No sinners saved by grace.

But you can be quite sure of this-
To you it may seem odd-
That when I take the wings of flight
I’m in the hands of God.
