Storm Storyby Dee H. Wade Tuesday, September 14th at 4 p.m. evacuees began to arrive at Trinity Presbyterian Church, which was the first shelter located in Mississippi from hurricane Ivan. We were able to give shelter to 237 people that first evening, on Wednesday 242 and Thursday 130. They were furnished 3 meals a day, cots, blankets, towels, toiletries, games and magazines which were provided by the local American Red Cross, volunteers and the community. The entire staff at Trinity Presbyterian Church and volunteers of the church helped provide for families all along the coastal area, which included Gulf Shores, Moss Point, Pascagoula, New Orleans, and Mobile. Thursday afternoon several trees fell in the church parking lot, no one was hurt although 1 tree hit the church and caused some leaks in a couple rooms. But all in all it didn't dampen the spirit among the people. Even during this stressful time in the middle of the storm the volunteers along with the Red Cross provided a good atmosphere for everyone. Dr. Morris Taylor, Interim Pastor "Trinity Church, its staff and volunteers, along with American Red Cross exhibited a wonderful ministry of love and care to the victims of Ivan. I have never seen a greater ministry."
