Jane Hines Scholarship in Journalism

by Rita Cochrane

The Jane Hines Scholarship in Journalism was established to honor Jane Hines, editor of the Presbyterian Voice until her retirement in 2006. Hines took the Voice from a small newsletter to the much valued, award-winning publication it is today.

Contributions to the Jane Hines Scholarship in Journalism have reached the $5,000 mark, which will be matched by an additional $5,000.  This is a great beginning.  However, the faster the fund grows, the sooner we can begin the process of giving a worthy student a scholarship. The fund will be managed by the Synod, keeping the principle intact.

The Synod Communications Committee along with the Synod Executive will be responsible for setting the amount of the scholarship and selecting the student to receive it. All applicants must be active members of a Presbyterian church (U.S.A.) and receive a recommendation from their pastor. Information about the scholarship, when available, will be published in the Voice, and on the Synod web site.

Through its Communications Committee, the Synod of Living Waters seeks to foster an ongoing interest in the field of journalism and communication in the synod.  Especially in times like these, the church needs good communicators to get the message out.

The PCUSA is going through a very difficult time right now, but out of difficult times, great things have been accomplished.  The need for communication rises considerably during these times when we are bombarded by information and misinformation. Please join us in supporting this worthwhile effort.

Send your contribution to the synod office, and designate it for the Jane Hines Scholarship in Journalism.
