More Clean Water Flowing

Haiti was the scene of a successful water purification unit installation by a group from the Synod's Living Waters for the World committee. Three volunteers from the Synod braved the July heat to travel with another group of volunteers from Romney, West Virginia to accomplish it. Engineers Ralph Hall from Pewee Valley Presbyterian Church in Louisville and Gene Reed from Westminster Presbyterian Church in Gulfport, Mississippi, joined group leader Wil Howie in the effort. "The good news from a stewardship viewpoint," said Howie, "is that all our expenses were covered by our partners from West Virginia except for the airfare."

Reed said that Haiti is a really beautiful place with incredibly dirty water. Plans are underway for another installation in Haiti this year. The LWW committee met August 7 at the Synod office to make plans for at least three more installations this year. Water surveys are being circulated through mission connections in various places of need in Mexico and Central America. The surveys are helpful in assessing the needs for water purification and the health risks that are known in various locations. "Insofar as possible," said committee chair Gary Bullard, "we should try to prioritize future installations according to the most pressing needs." Based on past experiences, sometimes the water supply that looks the cleanest may be the most dangerous and test results may show that questionable sources are relatively clean, according to Gene Reed.

The same stream that furnishes water for the horse and cow in the photo eventually ends up as drinking water in the Haitian village where the latest water purifier was installed by the LWW team.
